I read a book called Ender's Game in 8th grade and recently picked it up again in the Brackett Library. I finished it last week and it was better than I had remembered. Tonight I borrowed Ender's Shadow from the Brackett.
From Wikipedia:
"Ender's Game is also heavily criticized in reference to its literary merit. Card freely admits, in the revised edition's introduction, that it is not 'fine writing' by any means. Card noted most criticism of Ender's Game is based on its lack of artistic qualities. He justifies himself in that he sees writing as a tool to convey a story, and not the layered, and sometimes cryptic, art form of more literary prose, a style Card describes as 'muddled'."
I think I prefer the story over the cryptic fiction. I read mainly to be entertained, I don't really want to think too hard about what the author could mean by a certain passage. In middle and high school English classes we would analyze stories to the bone and sometimes I would think it was so ridiculous. Sure, there are many stories where the author is trying to convey a message, but I'm almost positive that some of those stories we were analyzing had no real underlying message. I thought it was stupid that the teacher was looking so hard to find meaning in everything, when I think the author just wanted to tell a story.
As a side note: I do enjoy looking for meaning in poetry, lyrics, and certain movies. I think part of the reason that I don't enjoy analyzing everything in a book is that it takes a larger investment of time than these three.
Which do you see fiction writing as: A tool to convey a story or a layered, cryptic art form of literary prose?

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.

I got my Nikon.
Let's get our knife on.
We'll get a couple snapshots of a bad move.Just turn the light on, cuz I forgot the flash.
We want these proofs to prove what not to do.
