The month of November is full of changes for the Sullivan family.
Molly accepted a position as a sales assistant at Time Warner Cable. She’ll be working for the people that sell air time. Monday is her first day, so she is kind of nervous this weekend. I think she’ll do awesome, but I may be a little biased.
We are moving to Sheffield Village beginning on the 17th. Hopefully, we will be mostly moved in by Thanksgiving. My family is coming out here the day before to help us move the big furniture and that should be the last step in getting everything to the new place. No turkey or big dinner for Thanksgiving this year; moving in and preparing a meal like that would just be crazy. The plan is to get a honey ham, make some mashed potatoes, a side dish, and a dessert. As my dad (surprisingly) said: “it’s not about the food, it’s about the company.”
The Monday after Thanksgiving, I start my new job. That’s right, I’m leaving SCK. I have not been actively looking for another job for a while now, but my recruiter from TekSystems called me with an opportunity at Human Arc last week. What I learned in the interview really impressed me. They use Agile software development, stay on the cutting edge of new technologies, and have a great program for furthering my skill set. Another really cool aspect of the company is that they have a focus on helping people. Their purpose is to improve the healthcare marketplace and help people to get healthcare coverage. They also have a community outreach program which includes giving their employees the opportunity to use paid work hours helping the community.
Apparently, I impressed them as well, because I got a job offer on Wednesday.
It’s hard to leave SCK because I like the people there so much. But, when I look at the future of my career, it’s pretty obvious that Human Arc has more to offer me as someone relatively new to the professional world. I might have enjoyed working for SCK for another 5 years, but I don’t see that time being spent adding a lot of marketable value to my experience. If I leave Human Arc in 5 years, I feel that I will have gained a considerable amount of aptitude to carry into the software development world.
To sum it up: Molly is nervous about starting a new job and excited about having a new job. We are busy packing for the move and excited about our new apartment. I am sad about leaving SCK and excited about starting at Human Arc.
